Shadow Work with Tarot: A 21-Day Depth Practice
Shadow work is not about fixing yourself. It is about becoming whole by meeting the parts of you that were rejected, shamed, or simply left behind. Tarot is an ideal mirror for this work because it bypasses rational defenses and speaks in symbols. This 21-day practice is designed to take you through the shadow gently, with structure and a way back out.
Before you begin#
You will need:
- A tarot deck you trust.
- A journal used only for this practice.
- A candle or low light for the evening spreads.
- A willingness to feel uncomfortable without acting on it.
Set a start date and commit to twenty-one consecutive days. Skipping days is allowed, but do not skip the integration day at the end.
The architecture of the three weeks#
The practice is divided into three seven-day phases:
- Week 1: Recognition. Naming the shadow. What patterns, emotions, and stories live underneath your daily reactions?
- Week 2: Dialogue. Speaking with the shadow. What does it want? What is it protecting?
- Week 3: Integration. Bringing the shadow into relationship with the rest of your life.
Each day has one card, one question, and one journal prompt.
Week 1: Recognition#
Day 1 โ The mask I wear#
Pull one card. Ask: What persona do I present to the world that costs me the most energy?
Day 2 โ The first rejection#
Pull one card. Ask: What part of me was rejected early in life and still waits to be welcomed?
Day 3 โ The repeating pattern#
Pull one card. Ask: What pattern keeps returning in relationships, work, or money?
Day 4 โ The emotion I avoid#
Pull one card. Ask: What feeling do I most often suppress, and what does it protect me from?
Day 5 โ The hidden judgment#
Pull one card. Ask: What do I judge harshly in others that secretly lives in me?
Day 6 โ The unlived life#
Pull one card. Ask: What desire or identity have I disowned to stay safe?
Day 7 โ Rest and synthesis#
No card. Read back over the first six entries and write: The theme of my shadow is…
Week 2: Dialogue#
Day 8 โ The shadow speaks#
Pull one card. Ask: If my shadow had a voice, what would it say today?
Day 9 โ The protection#
Pull one card. Ask: What is my shadow trying to protect me from?
Day 10 โ The cost#
Pull one card. Ask: What do I lose by keeping this shadow hidden?
Day 11 โ The gift#
Pull one card. Ask: What strength or gift is hidden inside this shadow?
Day 12 โ The boundary#
Pull one card. Ask: Where do I need to set a boundary so this shadow no longer needs to protect me?
Day 13 โ The forgiveness#
Pull one card. Ask: What part of myself needs forgiveness right now?
Day 14 โ Rest and dialogue#
No card. Write a letter from your shadow to yourself. Let it be honest, not polite.
Week 3: Integration#
Day 15 โ The new story#
Pull one card. Ask: What new story can I tell about this part of myself?
Day 16 โ The daily practice#
Pull one card. Ask: What small daily action would help this shadow feel safe enough to come forward?
Day 17 โ The relationship repair#
Pull one card. Ask: How does this shadow affect my relationships, and what is one repair I can make?
Day 18 โ The body holds it#
Pull one card. Ask: Where in my body does this shadow live, and what does it need?
Day 19 โ The ritual of return#
Pull one card. Ask: What ritual will mark this shadow as welcome in my life?
Day 20 โ The future self#
Pull one card. Ask: Who do I become when this shadow is integrated?
Day 21 โ Integration#
No card. Perform the ritual you named on Day 19. Then write three sentences:
- I now understand that my shadow is…
- I commit to relating to it by…
- The gift it brings to my life is…
How to read the cards in this practice#
Do not look up the card meaning first. Look at the image. Notice:
- What is the first feeling or body sensation?
- Which figure do you identify with?
- What is hidden in the background?
- What would happen if the scene continued?
Then open your guidebook and add one sentence from tradition to your own response.
When the work gets hard#
Shadow work can surface grief, anger, or shame. This is normal. If you feel overwhelmed:
- Stop pulling cards for the day.
- Place your hand on your heart and breathe slowly for two minutes.
- Write without editing for three minutes.
- Do not make major decisions during this practice.
If trauma surfaces that feels beyond self-work, consider working with a therapist alongside the cards.
Premium worksheet: Daily shadow journal#

Card: _____________
First feeling: _____________
Image detail that caught me: _____________
Answer to the day's question: _____________
What I do not want to admit: _____________
One kind thing I can say to myself: _____________
Final note#
The goal of shadow work is not to become perfect. It is to become real. Tarot does the work it always does: it shows you what is already there. The twenty-one days give you enough repetition that recognition turns into relationship โ and relationship turns into freedom.
