The 28 Lunar Mansions: Timing Magic by the Moon’s Daily House

Most lunar calendars stop at phases: new moon, full moon, quarter. The Chinese lunar mansion system goes deeper. It divides the moon’s monthly path through the zodiac into twenty-eight stations, each with its own temperament, auspices, and recommended activities. Used well, it becomes a precision timing tool for rituals, launches, healing, and important conversations.

What the lunar mansions are#

The moon completes one orbit of the earth roughly every 27.3 days. Ancient astronomers mapped this path against the fixed stars and divided it into twenty-eight segments. Each segment is a mansion, or xiu. The moon spends roughly one day in each mansion.

Unlike the sun-based zodiac, which marks personality, the lunar mansions mark the quality of a single day. They answer the question: what kind of day is this for what kind of action?

The four palaces#

The twenty-eight mansions are grouped into four palaces of seven, each associated with a direction and a mythic animal:

• Eastern Azure Dragon: Horn, Neck, Root, Room, Heart, Tail, Winnowing Basket
• Northern Black Tortoise: Dipper, Ox, Girl, Emptiness, Rooftop, Encampment, Wall
• Western White Tiger: Legs, Bond, Stomach, Hairy Head, Net, Turtle Beak, Three Stars
• Southern Vermilion Bird: Well, Ghosts, Willow, Star, Extended Net, Wings, Chariot

Knowing which palace the moon is in gives you the broader mood of the day. Dragon days favor beginnings. Tortoise days favor stillness and repair. Tiger days favor cutting through obstacles. Bird days favor communication and celebration.

How to find today’s mansion#

You can find the current lunar mansion using any Chinese almanac app or ephemeris that lists the moon’s sidereal position. Look for terms like “moon in 角” (Horn) or “Jiao.” Many astrology apps now include sidereal lunar mansion settings.

For ritual use, you do not need exact astronomical precision to the minute. Knowing the mansion for the day is usually enough.

The seven mansion types and how to use them#

Within each palace, the mansions have different characters. Here are the seven general types:

1. Horn (Jiao)#

Favorable for beginnings, planting, laying foundations, signing contracts, and starting a journey. The dragon’s horn pierces the veil between old and new. Use this day for anything that needs a clean, sharp start.

2. Neck (Kang)#

A mixed day. Good for building and repair, but risky for legal matters or confrontations. The dragon’s neck is flexible but vulnerable. Avoid rigid positions.

3. Root (Di)#

Excellent for home, family, real estate, and ancestral work. The root is where energy anchors. A good day to set boundaries, cleanse a space, or have a difficult but necessary conversation at home.

4. Room (Fang)#

Favorable for learning, teaching, writing, and inner cultivation. The dragon’s chamber is private. Do deep work rather than public work.

5. Heart (Xin)#

One of the most auspicious mansions. Favorable for leadership, public speaking, romance, and spiritual offerings. The dragon’s heart carries authority and warmth.

6. Tail (Wei)#

Mixed. Good for completion, endings, and letting go. Challenging for beginnings. The dragon’s tail sweeps away what is finished.

7. Winnowing Basket (Ji)#

Favorable for harvest, finance, and separating what matters from what does not. A good day for audits, reviews, and decisive cuts.

Applying the mansions to modern life#

Use the daily mansion as a layer on top of your regular calendar. Here is how:

• Launches: Choose Horn, Heart, or Winnowing Basket days.
• Difficult conversations: Choose Root or Heart days.
• Rest and healing: Choose Emptiness, Rooftop, or Dipper days.
• Creative work: Choose Room, Net, or Wings days.
• Ending something: Choose Tail, Turtle Beak, or Ghosts days.
• Travel: Choose Horn, Chariot, or Star days.

Do not let the system paralyze you. If a day is mixed, do what is necessary and save the big moves for a clearer window.

The monthly mansion ritual#

Once a month, do this review:

1. Find the mansion of the current new moon.
2. Note which palace it opens the month in.
3. Mark the four Heart-equivalent days (one in each palace) as your power days.
4. Mark the four Tail-equivalent days as release days.
